A Happier New Year
As a calendar year comes to a close, my fierce fight against the passage of time and getting older typically reaches a fever pitch. However this year, I find this fight to be notably absent. As I reflect on this twelve-month change, I recognize a number of transformational factors brought on by the age in which we now live.
The ability to work remotely allowed me to move to CA at the end of 2021, but continue teaching at Fordham’s Graduate School of Social Work, albeit at 6 AM. When this move to the West Coast proved problematic for both my son and myself, I was able to move back to the city and friends that I love, but also continue to lead a critical program for Oakland-based Seneca Family of Agencies.
The journey to Zoom et al. over the last couple years has had a profound, positive impact on my work/life balance, allowing me to juggle multiple employment opportunities and single parenthood with greater ease than one full-time job pre-pandemic.
What used to be a daunting task, social media, particularly LinkedIn, allowed me to transform my network into a job lead generating machine, landing me both my full-time job in CA and back here in NYC.
Despite COVID and cross county moves, I was able to finally adopt my foster son last month. This was done largely with the power of smart phone technology relative to email, phone calls, text messages, photos of documents, and FaceTime.
Again, through the time saving magic of the virtual meeting, I was able to finally invest in myself and begin an exploratory journey via executive coaching with Liz Khan Consulting.
If you are like me and many others these days, you are not a fan of New Year’s resolutions. However, make just one this year. Don’t let anything hold you back; let the age we are in allow you to transcend barriers and achieve your goals and dreams.
All the best in 2023!
